Countdown to All Souls Con – Our Favorite Things about the All Souls Trilogy – Day Seventeen – Rebecca Bishop

Onward to Day Seventeen!

Rebecca Bishop–and her ghost–cast a long shadow over the All Souls Trilogy. Rebecca gave Diana her foresight, her extra-sensory capacities, and her remarkable and rare facility with the higher, darker magics. She’s described as free-spirited, intelligent, thoughtful, caring, and a little mysterious–an unusual and complicated figure in the witching world. We meet Rebecca most often through her writing, or on the rare occasions when she appears as a ghost. In those times, Rebecca shows us the particular blend of creativity, whimsy, and grief that shaped her as a mother. Rebecca is a tragic figure–one who reminds us that our time with our loved ones is precious, and limited–but also a reminder of the tremendous love and sacrifice inherent to maternity.

What is your favorite thing about Rebecca Bishop? Come and tell us about it on our Facebook page, the Chamomile & Clove Clovers.

Countdown to All Souls Con – Our Favorite Things about the All Souls Trilogy – Day Sixteen – Stephen Proctor

On Day Sixteen, we remember Stephen Proctor, Diana’s funny, timewalking father. When we meet Stephen, he’s traveled to 1590 to look for Ashmole 782 in order to understand its connection to Diana. A creative, untrained weaver, Stephen managed to fashion his spells–spellbinding Diana, the protections on Ashmole 782–out of love and need. His familiar, Bennu the heron, represents his strong affinity with the element of water. Herons are symbolic in many cultures — they can represent inquisitiveness, curiosity, strength, and purity. Bennu helps Diana understand Corra, her familiar, and brings her closer to her father and his magic. We love Stephen for his humor, his intelligence, his strength, and his sacrifice.

Are you a fan of Stephen, too?

Come and tell us about it on our Facebook page, the Chamomile & Clove Clovers.

Countdown to All Souls Con – Our Favorite Things about the All Souls Trilogy – Day Fifteen – Goody Alsop

We’re halfway done with our countdown, y’all, which means that we’re TWO WEEKS out from All Souls Con 2018!

On Day Fifteen–the turning point of our countdown–it’s only fitting that we talk about Goody Alsop, the woman (and witch) who plays such a profound role in Diana’s journey. Goody Alsop reminds us that no matter how educated or experienced we think we are, there’s always more to learn. She teaches us to be humble, to be grateful, to be centered, to be precisely who we are and no one else. Goody Alsop helps Diana weave her forspell and understand what it means to be a witch apart; she is a teacher, a mentor, a surrogate mother, and a worthy friend who brings Diana back into the community and tradition of witchcraft. Sadly, we leave her behind when we leave 1590, but her influence can be felt throughout The Book of Life and beyond.

How do you feel about Goody Alsop? Tell us in our Facebook group, the Chamomile & Clove Clovers.

Countdown to All Souls Con – Our Favorite Things about the All Souls Trilogy – Day Fourteen – The Bishop House

On Day Fourteen of our countdown, we reminisce about Diana’s idiosyncratic and accidentally sentient family home, the Bishop House. Nestled in the picturesque countryside of upstate New York, the Bishop House has many quirks–a penchant for stealing objects, an abundance of ghosts, aged appliances, and a temper. Honestly, though, we couldn’t imagine Diana and her family living anywhere else. We love all of the scenes in the house: the first meeting of the Conventicle, the fireworks, Matthew doing yoga in the front lawn, the apple tree, the hop barn, the house’s internalization of the greatest hits of Fleetwood Mac… it’s all wonderful. We can’t wait to return to the Bishop House in the TV series and see it in all of its glory.

How do you think that the Bishop House became, well, itself? Tell us in our Facebook group, the Chamomile & Clove Clovers.

Countdown to All Souls Con – Our Favorite Things about the All Souls Trilogy – Day Thirteen – Sept-Tours

Every fantasy romance ought to have a castle, right?

That’s why we’re dedicating Day Thirteen of our countdown to All Souls Con to Sept-Tours, the magnificent seat of the de Clermont family and the Knights of Lazarus in the Auvergne. We associate Sept-Tours with so many wonderful moments — dancing in the salon, bundling (hee hee), Sarah and Ysabeau marveling over Diana’s pregnancy in the driveway, meeting Philippe — we had to include it! Sept-Tours represents so many things — home, tradition, family, legacy, power — it seems like its own character. Besides, who wouldn’t be pleasantly surprised to find that their vampire boyfriend had a killer castle tucked away in a remote corner of France? Find us that person. We dare you.

What’s your favorite scene in Sept-Tours?

Come and tell us on our Facebook page, the Chamomile & Clove Clovers.
