Countdown to All Souls Con – Our Favorite Things about the All Souls Trilogy – Day Twenty-One – Fernando Goncalves

You know that Cait wouldn’t leave Fernando out of the countdown, right?

On Day Twenty-One, it’s time to talk about Fernando — Matthew’s favorite brother-in-law and Gallowglass’s father’s mate. Fernando enters in The Book of Life and quickly becomes a central figure in the politics of the Bishop-Clairmont scion. We love Fernando for his humor, his ability to soothe and temper Matthew, his clear views on right and wrong, the perspective he gives us on Philippe de Clermont, and the complete grace he shows towards a newly-bereft Sarah Bishop. We cannot see the color saffron without thinking of him and often wish he could bring us a little bit of tortilla espanola for comfort.

Are you nuts about Fernando like Cait? Come and tell us about it on our Facebook page, the Chamomile & Clove Clovers.

Next! Here’s Day Twenty-Two!

Countdown to All Souls Con – Our Favorite Things about the All Souls Trilogy – Day Twenty – Jack Blackfriars

thom-masat-714289-unsplashThom Masat

On Day Twenty, we celebrate sweet Jack Blackfriars, the wayward orphan who becomes Matthew and Diana’s eldest son. And grandson. And, well, vampire genealogy is pretty complicated. Jack teaches Diana some of her earliest lessons in parenting and brings joy, spontaneity, curiosity, and cleverness to the Roydon household in 16th century London and Prague. We love Jack for so many reasons — his fondness for big dogs, puzzles, and shiny objects, his artistic talent, his arc that goes from innocence to savagery to redemption — but he is near and dear to us especially for the vampire he becomes in The Book of Life. The threat to his life gives Diana the push she needs to draw boundaries, own her strength, and protect the family–and legacy–that is hers.

What do you like about Jack Blackfriars? Come and tell us about it on our Facebook page, the Chamomile & Clove Clovers.

Episode 24 – The Trauma Express

ricardo-cruz-31577-unsplashRicardo Cruz

TRIGGER WARNING: This episode contains content about suicide, assisted suicide, and depression.

In Episode 24, The Trauma Train, we do our best to navigate the devastating landscape of Chapters 10 and 11 of Shadow of Night. We had so much to say, we barely fit it into three hours of recording. You heard me. There’s partnership, sacrifice, redemption, responsibility, forgiveness, and growth in this episode, and we can’t wait to hear what you think about it.

Oh, and we recommend a stretch/walk/wine/tea/fluffy happy things break at the interval. See you on the other side.

Countdown to All Souls Con – Our Favorite Things about the All Souls Trilogy – Day Nineteen – Marthe

Todd Quackenbush

On Day Nineteen, we’re talking about Marthe, Ysabeau’s long-suffering, oft-cackling partner in crime. Marthe has something to offer in every situation — a perfect omelette, a saucy song, a murder mystery, a cool hand — and she is one of our favorite fixtures amongst the constellation of de Clermont family attendants. We love that Marthe connects Diana to ancient traditions and that she represents a cool, calm, constant source of support and care.

What do you love best about Marthe? Cait is partial to the scene where Marthe and Matthew are singing bawdy Occitan love songs at Sept-Tours. Have something to say about Marthe? Come and tell us about it on our Facebook page, the Chamomile & Clove Clovers.

Countdown to All Souls Con – Our Favorite Things about the All Souls Trilogy – Day Eighteen – Philip and Rebecca Bishop-Clairmont

We know, we know — this is technically TWO THINGS. However, given that they’re infants, we decided they could share. The plight of twins, right?

Philip and Rebecca — the first of a new generation of Bright Born — represent so many things: Matthew and Diana’s enduring love, the end of centuries of prejudice and persecution, a new beginning for the world of creatures, and more. They’re a delightfully entertaining blend of their parents; it’s almost as much fun to watch their parents figure out how to, well, parent as it is to watch them grow. We cannot wait to see what the youngest members of the Bishop-Clairmont scion will add to the family and the World of All Souls as they develop.

What do you want to know about Philip and Rebecca? Tell us about it on our Facebook page, the Chamomile & Clove Clovers.
